ジャコウネコは名前に「ネコ」が付いていますが実際はネコではなく、独立した種類の動物です。ネコに似ているから…という程度の理由で名付けられているとか。シュッとしたマズルと長〜い胴体に短い足、そしてフサフサの長い尻尾。実は日本人なら馴染みのある「ハクビシン」と近縁種なのです！模様こそ違いますが、ハクビシンとジャコウネコ、体型が似てますよね？

Common Palm civets look sort of like cats... which is why in Japanese we call them "Musk Cats". In Japan, some of you may have seen Masked Palm Civets walking around in the back alleys or along the power cables above. These guys are a subspecies of the civets and thus closely related to the Common Palm Civets. Aside from the patterns of the fur, they do have a similar build right?

ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、コピルアックとはジャコウネコが排出した未消化のコーヒー豆を使って淹れるコーヒーのこと。希少価値から高額で取引されるコーヒー豆なのです。カンボジア産の「コピルアック」（産地によって名称が変わるそうで、コピルアックはインドネシア産）はないそうですが、近隣アジア諸国では悲しいことにジャコウネコを劣悪な環境で飼育して大量生産する背景があります。自然に落ちている未消化のコーヒー豆を採取することに希少価値があるわけで、捕らえて無理やり消化できない豆しか与えずに排出させて…というのはかなり残酷な扱いだと思います。

絶滅危惧種としては危険度が低い「軽度懸念」ですが、しっかり問題視すべき状況に置かれているんです！

I'm sure many of you have heard of "Kopi Luwak Coffee", or maybe Civet Coffee. When Common Palm Civets eat coffee beans, they excrete it out in whole because they cannot digest the beans. However, the beans still become fermented while inside the civet's stomach, and this makes for very fragrant and tasty coffee. Because it is very rare to find coffee beans excreted by civets in the wild, it has become a type of delicacy and is traded for a very high price. 

Sadly, hunters are capturing Common Palm Civets to keep in farms; they are kept in small dirty cages and fed only coffee beans (which means no edible food and constant stress to its intestines), and most die from illness.

They are considered LC but that doesn't necessarily mean they are living in a safe environment.

カンボジアではまだファームなどは存在せずカンボジアブランドのジャコウネココーヒーもないので、ACCBはそのままジャコウネコにとって良い環境を守っていけるように活動しています。

Currently, there are no Kopi Luwak farms in Cambodia. ACCB is trying to educate visitors and local people about Kopi Luwak in hopes to maintain the safe environment they have for the civets.

Just a side note fun fact... Common Palm Civets smell like popcorn!

ベンガルヤマネコは広範囲に分布しているため全体的に見ると「軽度懸念」ですが、地域亜種によっては1A類に分類される希少種もいるんです…！見た目はみんな、ちょっとワイルドなイエネコという印象を受けると思いますが、地域によって多少差がでてきます。暑い地域に住む亜種は小柄でスレンダーで3.5kg前後と本当にイエネコっぽい体型ですが、シベリアなどの寒冷地に住む亜種は平均体重が倍近くになり冬毛を纏うとボリューミーになるのです。

Leopard Cats are widespread and in general considered Least Concern. However, regional subspecies are categorised differently depending on the region. They all look similar with a wild house cat look. In tropical and hot regions they tend to be smaller (max 3.5kg or so) and slender. In cold regions they weigh almost double, gaining weight to prepare for winter and losing weight by summer.

カンボジアにおいて、ベンガルヤマネコは軽度懸念とされています。捨てられたイエネコだと思って拾ったらヤマネコだったなんてことは結構ある話だそうでACCBにいるヤマネコたちもみんな似たような境遇で施設に辿り着いたそうです。スナドリネコと言って見た目がベンガルヤマネコにそっくりな種がいますが、私たちが施設を訪れる少し前には「スナドリネコを保護した！」と連絡があったそうです。びっくりして現場に急いだら結局はベンガルヤマネコだったとか…。今年に入ってすでに４匹ほどリハビリを経て野生に帰したとか！

以前はブリーディングも行っており数匹リリースしていますが、ACCBは1A~2類の動物たちに保護活動をフォーカスしたいため、現在はベンガルヤマネコの繁殖プロジェクトは行っていないそうです。

In Cambodia, Leopard Cats are also considered LC. They are frequently mistaken as house cats and "stolen" as a kitten. They also look quite similar to the Asian Fishing Cat, and sometimes locals call rescue thinking they are AFCs! This year ACCB has already rehabilitated and released 4 Leopard Cats back into the wild. 

ACCB used to breed Leopard Cats too until a few yrs ago. Now, they have stopped breeding so that they can focus on protecting the VU, EN, and CR species.

ちなみにイリオモテヤマネコとツシマヤマネコは唯一日本に生息するベンガルヤマネコの亜種で、２種ともに絶滅危惧1A類（最も危険度が高い）に分類されています。それぞれ１００頭前後しか生息していないと推測されています。

In Japan there are 2 regional subspecies of the Leopard Cats; Iriomote Wild Cat and Tsushima Wild Cat. These are considered Critically Endangered on the red list. It is estimated that for both, only 100 or less individuals are left...
