ACCBのアイドル、ボウシテナガザルのピンキーちゃん。
ボウシテナガザルの７割ほどはカンボジアに生息しており、生息地も今のところ分断化されておらずそこそこ安定しています。
ですが近年国の急成長により伐採による環境破壊が深刻になってきています。
今回シェムリアップからプノンペンに戻る際も飛行機から下を見下ろすと、かなり削られてしまっている山がたくさんありなかなかショックでした…！
Approximately 70% of Pileated Gibbons live in Cambodia, 30% in Thailand, and a small population in Laos.
In Cambodia the population is not fragmented but logging and deforestation has become a big threat to these animals that rely on tall trees and dense forests for survival.
It was depressing seeing so many bare and damaged mountains from our flight back to Phnom Penh...
ここで生活するテナガザルたちはほとんどみんなペットとして劣悪な環境で飼われていた子たちで、
ピンキーは幼い頃にペット用としてハンターが親から奪い、人に育てられました。
すでに人慣れしてしまっているので野生に返すことはできないのです…！
写真を撮られることにも慣れており、ツアー客が来るとしっかりポーズをとってくれるんですよ〜
Most of the gibbons here used to be pets kept in poor conditions. This one, named Pinky by her previous owners, was in fact taken by hunters from her parents and illegally sold as a pet. They're already tame so it is difficult to rehabilitate them back to the wild...!
She is even used to being photographed so when tourists come by the free space she likes to pose and show off her jumps.
テナガザルは家族じゃない限り群れ行動はしないので、ACCBにいる個体はみんなそれぞれのケージで暮らしています。
メス用のケージは高い木がたくさんあるスペースが電気フェンスで覆われているフリースペースがあり、その中にケージがあるそうです。
もう一人のメスと交代で自由時間を過ごします！
この電気フェンスがかなり高額なためオスたちは未だに普通のケージで過ごしていますが、それでも十分な高さがあり飛んだり跳ねたり自由に動き回れます！
These guys live solo unless they have families, so the gibbons at ACCB have their own cages.
For the females there is a free space with tall trees that is surrounded by electric wire fences and inside this area there is another cage. The females take turns to enjoy the freedom one by one.
Electric fences are quite expensive so there are none for the males yet, but they still do have a tall and spacious cage!

ちなみにメスは全体的に白っぽく頭とお腹が黒いですが、オスは反対に全体的に黒に顔まわりと手が白いんです！
We couldn't get a good shot of the males since they were in the shade most of the time, but they have opposite fur colours.
Females have light beige coats with some black on the head and stomach, but males are black with some white on the hands and around the face.
２日目、バタグールに会いに行くと電気フェンス越しに様子を見に来た子。地面に座っているテナガザルはなかなかレアな光景です笑
この距離感でしばらく座ったり寝そべったりしていました！
Day 2, after meeting the Batagur, she came down from the trees and checked what we were up to. A gibbon on the ground is a pretty rare scene I think...XD
伐採や環境破壊以外にも密猟によって絶滅の危機にいるボウシテナガザル。ペット用以外にも食用や伝統薬用として取引されています。
保護されて初めてACCBに連れてこられた時の怯えきったサルたちの話を聞くとやはり違法取引はもっとしっかり取り締まっていかなければいけないと思いました。
ここのスタッフの話だとカンボジアでは未だに政府との連携がうまくとれず、１０年で９割も野生動物が減少してしまったそうです！
せっかく豊かな土地と生態系がまだかろうじてあるので、これからの保護活動が大切ですね！
Like many endangered wildlife, these gibbons are threatened by logging, habitat destruction, and illegal trade for pets, meat and medicine.
Hearing about the stories of each gibbon and how they reached ACCB really pained us. It seems to be very difficult to intervene and restrict illegal trades without the full cooperation of the government...
Within the last decade Cambodia has lost almost 90% of its wildlife and sadly many locals are still blind to this fact. Protecting what is left and captive breeding programmes will be crucial in saving these endangered species!
