ユキヒョウ / Snow leopard
IUCNレッドリスト：危急 (2016年の調査により絶滅危惧1B類から2類へ見直されました）
IUCN red list: VULNERABLE (research in 2016 recategorised them from EN to VU)
中央アジアの寒い山岳地帯に住むユキヒョウ。大きくてフサフサの脚はスノーシュー代わりになり、長い尻尾は雪山の中でバランスを取ったり暖をとるために使います！
Living in the mountainous areas in Central Asia, these guys have large furry feet that act as snowshoes, and exceptionally long and fluffy tails that are good for balance and warmth. Yes, they wrap their tail around their paws, just like house cats...!
遊びたがりで飛び跳ねたり、ボールで遊んだりとても活発でした♡
ユキヒョウは高くて１５m前後飛べることもあるそうです！余裕で私の上を飛び越えられますね…。
現在は４５年ぶりに絶滅危惧種リストから外されていますが（絶滅危惧１類ではない）、理由は野生の個体数が２５００頭以上になり生息数の減少がやや落ち着いてきているからです。とはいえスピードが遅くなったというだけで未だに数は減少傾向のままなので、これからの保護活動が重要になってきます！
This snow leopard was very playful, jumping around the other one and playing with a ball in their enclosure!
Snow leopards can leap as high as 15m, so this leap here is hardly a jump!
After 45 years of being on the red list as an endangered species, they are currently "off the list" (because they are now VU) due to the wild population reaching above 2500 and lower rate of decline. However this does not mean that they have stopped declining!

中国に生息するヤギとアンテロープに似た特徴を持つ動物ですが、実際はひつじの近縁です。ゴールドに輝くような綺麗な毛をまとっています！大きめの鼻は呼吸で熱を逃がさないような特殊な構造になっており、皮膚は油分を含んでいて防水効果があり山岳地帯の悪天候から守ってくれます。
Sometimes called the goat-antelope, the takins are actually more closely related to sheep. Their gold fur really looks majestic under the sun! It was a shame the sun wasn't out when we were there...
Their large nose prevents heat loss and their oily skin protects them from harsh wet climates in the mountains.
危険を察知すると素早く動きますが基本的にはゆったりとしているターキンなのでヒョウやオオカミなどの餌食になります。
元々の生息数も低く生息地も分断されているので危急種なのです。
Takins are generally slow paced (except when in danger) so they become prey to leopards and wolves.
However their population is small to begin with, and with divided habitat range it makes it difficult for takins to thrive. Poaching for meat has also been a growing problem for the golden takins.
ボルネオオランウータン / Bornean Orangutan
IUCNレッドリスト：絶滅寸前（最も危険度が高い絶滅危惧1A類）
IUCN red list: CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
彼らはスマトラとボルネオにしか生息せず、多摩動物公園にいたのはボルネオオランウータンです。
マレー語では 森の人 という意味を持ち、とても賢い動物です！
両腕は身長より長く、木の上での生活に適しています。ボルネオやスマトラでの森林伐採は深刻な問題で、１日の９割ほどを木の上で過ごすオランウータンにとってはかなり痛手です…！人との衝突や密猟も絶滅危惧種になってしまった原因です。
Orangutans are only found on Sumatra and Borneo, and this one at Tama Zoo was a Borean Orangutan.
In the Malay language their name means "person of the forest", which is very fitting to their lifestyle in which 90% of a day is spent on trees!
Also fitting is their arm length which is in fact longer than their standing height.
Deforestation and habitat destruction is especially life threatening to orangutans, as their life depends heavily on forests.
