こんにちは！

東京は最近かなり冷え込んできましたねっ

今回の足跡は皆さん、ネコ科かイヌ科かなって予測できたかと思いますが、

冬っぽいネコ科といえば？？

正解は

ユキヒョウ

です！英名はそのまま、Snow Leopardになりますね。

ユキヒョウは現在IUCNではVU (絶滅危惧II類)に分類されています。それまでは一つ危険度が高いENだったのですが、理由として

・繁殖可能な野生の個体数が推定2500以上10,000未満いる

・過去３世代の統計で生息数がおよそ１０％減少傾向にある

などがあります。

彼らは主にヒマラヤ山脈、チベット高原、中央アジアやシベリアの標高３０００〜５０００メートルほどある山岳地帯に住んでいます。

かなり寒く積雪も非常に多い過酷な環境です。

そんな環境で生きていくために、いろんな身体的特徴が備わっているのです！

毛色：グレイッシュベージュで大きめの大胆なロゼット模様

雪山の中で上手に狩りをしたり敵から身を隠す時に大活躍！

毛足：体、足、しっぽまで長めのモフモフ系

ズバリ寒さ対策ですね。

足先・肉球：大きめ

雪の上を歩いていても沈まないようにしっかりしています

耳：小さめで丸みをおびている

少しでも体温を逃がさないような作りになっています

四肢：がっしりした短めの前肢、長い後肢

すごい跳躍力を持ち、崖や木の上など、様々なところに移動する時に活躍します。なんと１０mもジャンプできます！

しっぽ：フサフサで長—い！

イエネコ同様にバランス感覚に重要。１０mジャンプの時にも重宝します！

そんなユキヒョウについてでしたが、SAMSARAの絶滅危惧種Tシリーズにアムールヒョウもいますね。

寒い地域に生息するアムールヒョウとユキヒョウ、なんとな〜く印象がかぶる方もいると思います。

しかしアムールヒョウは 見た目はいわゆるヒョウ！

黄色っぽい褐色ベースの毛色に細かい綺麗なロゼット模様を持ち、毛の長さも短すぎず長すぎず・・・

あまり似ていないのです（笑）

もうひとつ似ていない点について・・・

ヒョウ・ユキヒョウ・ライオン・トラ・ジャガーなどみんなネコ科に属するのですが。

実はヒョウはライオンやジャガーと近縁で、

ユキヒョウはトラと最も近いそうです！

Yesterday's paw prints belong to.....

the snow leopard!!

Snow Leopards are considered VU (vulnerable) on the IUCN red data list.

They were actually considered EN (endangered, one rank higher in risk than VU) for a long time, but successful conservation has led to improvements in population decreasing rates and numbers of mature wild individuals.

They inhabit cold harsh snowy environments such as the Himalayas, Tibetan plateau, and mountains in central Asia and Sibera ranging from 3000m-5000m in elevation.

To survive in such environments, snow leopards have adapted and acquired various special physical features...

1. Fur colour/pattern

Beautiful greyish beige coat with large rosettes to camouflage themselves in snowy mountainous regions

2. Long furs with woolly undercoats (even feet and tail!)

Best protection against the cold!

3. Large feet and paws

Easier to walk on deep snow

4. Shorter and stronger front legs, longer hind legs

They can jump up to 10m high! These legs carry them far into the mountains.

5. Short round ears

Less surface area prevents excess heat loss

6. Very long bushy tail

Great for balance and warmth, just like your small felines at home too...;)

But in extreme condition, they need extra of everything!

Now, remember we have an Amur Leopard design T-shirt?

Some of you might wonder just how different an Amur and Snow might be, since they both live in cold areas...

But they are very different!

Amur Leopards have yellowish brown coats with smaller rosettes. Their paw size and tail length are not as exaggerated, as well as their fur density.

Generally they have a more sharp physique in comparison to the Snow Leopard.

Another interesting difference:

Genetically, Leopards are more related to lions and jaguars

while Snow Leopards are more close to TIGERS!!!
